Reports To

The Editorial Assistant will join a team consisting of two Co-Editors and the Managing Editor. The Editorial Assistant will report to the Managing Editor.

Job Overview

The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology (formerly The Canadian Mineralogist) is a highly regarded international academic journal publishing manuscripts on mineralogy, crystallography, petrology, economic geology, geochemistry, and related fields. Our journal values scientific excellence and clear communication of that science. The Editorial Assistant assists with the review and production process by ensuring that they conform to The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology formatting style and typesetting requirements.

10 hours per week of work is expected. The schedule is flexible; the Editorial Assistant works remotely and communicates with the Managing Editor via e-mail and weekly virtual meetings.

Responsibilities and Duties

Required

  • Upload Supplementary Data to the Depository of Unpublished Data
  • Format article text and headings, references, and tables according to The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology style.
  • Check that references cited in the manuscript text are consistent with the Reference list.
  • Locate missing reference details using information available on the Internet.
  • Check that figure and table captions are complete and consistent with the figures and tables provided, as well as with the text.
  • Check article figures for style and quality.
  • Prepare written summaries of style errors which require the Managing Editor’s intervention.
  • Assist the Managing Editor with building and maintaining The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology style guide.

Qualifications

  • Education level: High School Diploma required, in-progress or complete Bachelor’s Degree an asset.
  • Experience: Copyediting experience is a asset, but is not required.
      • Ability to work within deadlines.
      • Very strong attention to detail.
      • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Proficient with the MS Office suite of programs, particularly Word and Excel.
    • Proficient with Internet searches and e-mail.
    • Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Photoshop is an asset.
    • Familiarity with editorial style guides is an asset.

Salary Expectations

The Editorial Assistant position is paid hourly at a rate of $25/hr.
