Registration FAQs for Integrated Sciences Students

During the registration period, this page is updated regularly with answers to the most commonly asked questions. You may find the quickest answers to your questions here, especially during the registration period.

UBC assigns registration dates and times based on a variety of factors. If the course is full when your registration opens, please register on the waitlist. If the waitlist is full please wait until there is space on the waitlist and then register.

If you are not able to get into the ISCI course you were hoping for, you may need to select a different ISCI course.

Registration & Waitlists

How do the ISCI waitlists work?

ISCI course waitlists are managed by Workday and the Integrated Sciences office. Please do not contact instructors of ISCI courses regarding registration.

Students can register themselves on ISCI waitlists only when space is available. If a waitlist is full and the course is marked “closed,” you will need to wait until space opens. The ISCI office does not maintain offline waitlists.

We aim to ensure that all ISCI students are able to complete their required 7 credits of ISCI. Students already registered in more than 7 ISCI credits may receive lower priority for additional ISCI courses.

ISCI students are moved into available seats based on the date and time they registered on the waitlist.

Currently, only ISCI students have access to ISCI courses due to high demand. However, some non‑ISCI students may still register on the waitlist. This means your position may appear lower than it actually is, as ISCI students are prioritized.

If you are an Integrated Sciences student and there is space on the waitlist but you are unable to register (e.g., due to not meeting third‑year standing), please contact the ISCI office right away. We can only add you to the waitlist if space is available at the time we receive your request.

During the registration period, waitlist enrolment may temporarily exceed the listed capacity. Once registration ends, the waitlist will be strictly limited to its set capacity. We are unable to add students to waitlists that have already reached capacity.

The ISCI course I want is closed and I can’t see a waitlist. What can I do?

If the course status is “closed,” both the course and the waitlist are full. Once a space becomes available, students who meet the course restrictions will be able to register.

For ISCI 448, ISCI 361, and ISCI 461, a separate application is required. Students will be registered once the application is approved.

My registration hasn’t opened yet. Can you save a seat for me?

Unfortunately, we cannot save seats. UBC determines your registration time, which can be found in Workday.

My registration is blocked and there is a message that says to contact an advisor in the program or faculty advising office. What do I do?

If you are unable to register due to an academic hold you must contact Science Advising (not the Integrated Sciences office)

I can’t register in a course.

Contact the undergraduate advisor of the department offering the course. Integrated Sciences advisors cannot register students into courses offered by other departments.

Year Standing & Course Access

What should I register in for 2nd year?
  • Take prerequisites for the 3rd‑ and 4th‑year courses you plan to include in your degree. If you’re unsure which courses to take, drop by our advising hours.
  • For promotion to 3rd‑year standing, you need 15 credits of 200‑level or above Science credits (honorary science credits do not count).
  • Register in courses that fulfill Faculty of Science degree requirements.
  • ISCI 300 is recommended for 2nd‑ and 3rd‑year Integrated Sciences students.
I am a 2nd year student and I did not get into Integrated Sciences through the 2nd year specialization application, but I still want to be in Integrated Sciences. What can I do?

We are currently at capacity for second‑year students, so there is nothing we can do at this time. Second‑year students cannot apply to transfer into Integrated Sciences until Term 2, and only if space becomes available.

Please register in the courses required for the specialization you are currently in and reach out again at the end of term 1.

I wasn’t promoted to 3rd year standing. How do I register in courses that require 3rd year class standing?

If a course requires 3rd‑year class standing and you were not promoted, contact the department offering the course. They can review your situation, determine whether you meet the prerequisites, and let you know if they can grant you access.

I expected to be promoted but wasn’t. Was there a mistake?

Class standing is assessed automatically by Workday and is overseen by the Faculty of Science Advising office. Please review the promotion requirements here:
Faculty of Science Promotion Requirements

I’m not in Integrated Sciences but want to register in a restricted ISCI course.

If space is available after 3rd‑year registration, please contact us and we will assist you with registering on a waitlist. Traditionally, most ISCI courses and waitlists fill during the registration period, and there is no space for non‑ISCI students at this time. Please do not contact us if the course and waitlist are full.

I am a 3rd year student transferring into Integrated Sciences. How can I register in ISCI courses?

Students who are already registered in the Integrated Sciences specialization have priority over transferring students. Please register on the waitlist for any ISCI courses you wish to take.

Once your Degree Proposal is approved and you are officially in the Integrated Sciences specialization, you will receive higher priority on the waitlist.

Degree Proposal & Course Changes

I registered in courses that are different from what is listed on my Degree Proposal. What do I do?

Contact your mentor with the changes, then forward the approved changes to the ISCI office so we can update your Degree Proposal. This should be done immediately after registration.

Course Change Form:
Course Change Request Form

What if a course in my Degree Proposal is unavailable or has a time conflict?

Register in an alternate course and contact your mentor with the proposed changes. Include:

  • A summary of courses added and removed (Course Change Request Form)
  • A rationale for each change
  • A new summary of your courses arranged by discipline

Once approved, forward the email to intsci@science.ubc.ca and we will update your Degree Proposal.

This is my final year and a required course is full or conflicts with another.

Contact the department offering the course to determine whether you can still register. If not, consult your mentor and the ISCI office to identify an alternate course and update your Degree Proposal accordingly.

Directed Studies

ISCI 448 Directed Study registration

Only Integrated Sciences students may take this course. We will register students once the ISCI 448 application (available in your Degree Proposal account) is approved. The form must be signed by your supervisor and emailed to intsci@science.ubc.ca.

Restricted Courses

A course I am trying to register in is restricted. What should I do?

If you are unable to register in one of the courses listed in your Degree Proposal (for example, an upper‑level lab), please check the list below for specific instructions.

If the course is not listed, contact the course instructor or the undergraduate advisor for the department offering the course. Explain your situation and provide contact information for your Integrated Sciences mentor. You will need to justify why you should be admitted to the course.

If you are still not admitted, contact your Integrated Sciences mentor promptly. You may need to revise your contract and take another course.

  • BIOC 301, 421 – restricted to Biochemistry students.
  • BIOC 303, 410 – may be taken with instructor permission and required prerequisites.
  • BIOL 340, 341, 342 – BIOL 342 connect with the Biology office - they will register students after CMS students in the lab. For BIOL 340 or 341 please join the waitlist. They anticipate movement on the course/waitlist closer to the beginning of term OR take ISCI 448 (Directed Studies) instead.
  • BIOL 351, 352, 363 – restricted to Biology students.

  • FNH 451, 470, 475 – limited enrolment.
  • KIN courses* – restricted. If the course is listed in your degree proposal for 2026 W term 1 or 2 you should be able to register on the waitlist.
  • MICB 322, 323 – restricted to Microbiology & Immunology students.
  • MICB 406, 407 – restricted and not available to Integrated Sciences students.
  • NSCI 200, 201 – not available to Integrated Sciences students.

  • PCTH 400 – students with at least 75% in PCTH 301 and 303 may be permitted to take this course.
  • PHAR 302, 303, 306, 421, 424 – ISCI students may register with BIOL 201 and BIOL 234 as prerequisites.
  • PSYC 260, 360, 370, 371 – consult instructor for possible admission, or take PSYC 324 and PSYC 344 instead (note: PSYC 324 and 344 are not recognized as a science course; consult the Science Credit Exclusion List).
  • Various lab courses – lab courses are often difficult for ISCI students to access; a Directed Studies course is recommended as a substitution.
